Absolutely beautiful Orange spearer from Lawadi, Papua New Guinea

On September 17, 1998 the 23 meter vessel STARSHIP left Bell Harbor in Seattle, Washington USA on a 1000 day educational circumnavigation around our planet. Daily journal entries permit anybody who would like to share this adventure to follow the crew around the world.

On one of their dusk dives near the town of Lawadi, In Papua New Guinea (PNG), they found two large orange mantis shrimps sitting at the entrance to their holes. In the image above, you can clearly see the tip of one of its remarkable raptorial appendages in the foreground. This beautiful color in mantis shrimps may be an adaptation to the light levels present at the depths where this critter is usually found.
