Acromyrmex versicolor: Attacking Grendel in his Lair

Like many of the ant colonies in the desert, Acromyrmex versicolor is also subject to ambush attacks by Euryopsis spiders, which use their venom to weaken lone foragers before pouncing for the kill. In this case, an Acromyrmex ant tries to help her dead comrade by climbing precariously onto the spider's silken web and trying to bite it. The spider retreats from the attack, but comes back to continue its gruesome feast when the attackers leave. For more dramatic pictures, visit Dale Ward's site.
