| Circa 1907. Wheeler in USA: "I have found no indications of its occurence outside of a rather restricted area in Texas. The area seems to have its center at Austin and to comprise the territory for some hundreds of miles north and south in a narrow belt where there is a moderate annual rain-fall and where the forests are of a mesophytic character. I have never seen it in the dry western portions of the state nor have I heard of its occurence in the more humid eastern counties, in Lousiana, or the other Gulf States. It was seen as far south aa Alice in Nuces county and probably occurs as far north as Waco and Fort Worth. It certainly could not endure the winters of the "Panhandle" region nor even those of the extreme northeastern portion of Texas. Even in the vicinity of Austin, large colonies are rather sporadic. It prefers the neighborhood of rivers and creeks and especially the rich soil of the pecan abd the pure sand or somewhat clayey soil of the post-oak woods. In such spots one is always sure of finding it along the banks of the Colorado, Comal, and Guadaloupe rivers." | It is tolerant of cold, wet conditions and colonies can be found in small clearings and gaps in dense cloud forest. On the transect on the north side of Volcan Barva it has been found at 1100m elevation but not at 500m or 2000m. On the Central Valley side it has been collected at 1600m elevation at Zurqui. | In Costa Rica this species prefers open dry habitats such as urban areas around San Jose and seasonally dry habitats of Guanacaste Province. Acromyrmex volcanus
| Acromyrmex volcanus is common in mature wet forest on the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica, occurring from sea level to about 1000m elevation. It is one of the most common and conspicuous attines in lowland primary forest, giving way to Atta in second growth and more open habitats.
